The University of Groningen (RUG) has replaced the Peregrine cluster, an essential tool for large-scale computing, with the new and upgraded Hábrók cluster. This advanced HPC solution offers enhanced computing power, storage capacity, and performance, ideal for scientific research.
Products
Researchers at the University of Groningen (RUG) often encounter computational limitations when processing vast amounts of data. In response to this, RUG utilizes the Peregrine cluster for large-scale computations. However, after seven years, the Peregrine cluster is approaching the end of its lifespan and will be replaced by the new and upgraded Hábrók cluster, co-designed by Dell and Bossers & Cnossen.
Currently under construction and being tested at the Coenraad Bron Center, RUG’s new high-performance computing (HPC) data center, the Hábrók cluster is expected to be operational in the final quarter of this year following the successful migration of Peregrine data.
Named after the legendary Norwegian hawk, Hábrók significantly enhances computational power. With advanced hardware, Hábrók provides increased computing power and storage capacity, from 500TB to an impressive 2PB. Each node is equipped with its own processor, memory, and storage, enabling faster data processing and overcoming previous limitations. Additionally, “big memory nodes” with 4TB memory facilitate memory-intensive computations. Modern GPUs offer improved performance, particularly in processing large-scale training data for machine learning models. Operating in a cloud environment, the Hábrók cluster ensures efficient maintenance, expansion, and seamless deployment of new features.
These advanced computing facilities are widely available for scientific research in various domains, including Life Science, Digital Humanities, and Astronomy.
