PDU

PDU (power distribution unit) is a collective name for multi-sockets (power distribution systems), which are mounted in 19" racks. The objective of a PDU is to divide the existing power circuit into several outlets so that all the equipment in the 19" rack can be connected with its own socket.

The PDU can be fitted with extra functions to improve control of the power. Examples of this are:

  • Meters (kWh, Amp, Volt, power factor, etc.)
  • Switching a server remotely to reboot it or acquire a better grip on the data centre
  • Fusing to prevent overloading or isolate faults so that other equipment is not switched off by a short-circuit.

Often, there are 2 or more power circuits in the 19" racks, to prevent power outage.
